Soft Water Shower

Have you ever come out of a nice long shower but you skin felt slightly itchy and a little dry. Dry as in dry skin after you’ve towelled down? Does your hair feel unmanageable and look worse than before you took that shower?

Well this is almost certainly due to the water being hard. In this blog we go through the benefits of having soft water to wash and bathe in.

Hard water is water as you may know contains high concentrations of undissolved minerals, such as calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate). Hard water is not harmful to our health but it is ineffective when used to wash our clothes and washing to wash our bodies with.

Water softener systems can be installed to remove these dissolved magnesium and calcium impurities making it more pleasant to drink and to wash with.

Dryness and pruritus (Itching)

According to the Water Quality Association (WQA), hard water is available and is used in more than 85 percent of North America. Hard water contains insoluble minerals and salts which settle on the surface of the skin and cause dryness. Dry skin is characterized by a dull, flat appearance which makes it is prone to itching. Inflammation can occur and can, in rare cases cause bleeding and in extreme cases cracking of the skin.

Hard water covers the skin with a layer of an impenetrable film. This film forms a barrier that does not allow for effective removal of dirt and harmful pathogens. Hard water combines with soap to form soap residues (also known as calcium deposits). This sticky substance prevents the natural oils of the body from reaching the epidermis in the skin and inhibits the skin’s natural antimicrobial properties. This leads to rosacea (reddening of the skin) and other skin pimples.

Destroying healthy skin cells

Undissolved impurities in hard water (such as zinc, lead, magnesium and calcium) can act as free radicals. Free radicals are unstable substances that break down elastin and collagen in healthy skin cells that can lead to many skin conditions. The affect of these free radicals can lead to a free radical cascade – a damaging domino effect that increases skin’s vulnerability to external stress factors such as sun damage by harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Hard water does not directly cause acne, but its mineral content can contribute to acne flare-ups. Acne (or acne vulgaris) is a skin disease common in adolescents. Hard water deprives the skin of natural oils that lubricate and moisturize the surface of the skin. This causes skin irritation and dryness which leads to acne. Bathing an area of the skin with hot hard water opens the pores, so that soap residue can penetrate and blocks these pores. This aggravates the condition further and makes acne difficult to handle and control.
